What is medical evacuation?

Medical evacuation is the step that follows first aid — safely transporting a patient to a facility where they can receive proper, thorough treatment. Done well, it significantly improves recovery and survival.

It matters most for travellers and anyone far from a medical centre when an emergency strikes. The destination might be the nearest hospital, or in some cases a facility in another country better suited to the patient’s needs.

Three ways to move a patient

The right method depends on distance, urgency and the patient’s condition.

Helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft for long-distance or time-critical transfers — avoiding traffic and taking the shortest route when treatment can’t wait.
